Kolkata Port Dock

The Kolkata Dock System also includes impounded dock systems at Netaji Subhas near kidderpore which handles mostly containers and Haldia. The shipyards Kolkata Dockyard, are at the face of the River Hooghly, are among the oldest in the country. Their origin dates back to the period following the British East India Company in 1870, following the shift of power from the company to the British crown and new ports were needed. Throughout its history, the yards have built vessels for the Indian Navy. At the peak of its activity has occupied more than 16% of the total number of vessels.

The one where repairing is also called arsenal, and has also generally dry dock ; the one where they make and repair small boats is also called the boatyard, named the inclined plane when you pull in dry boats. The plant structure, the size and configuration of establishments varies according to the type of activity that is carried out and the size of the boats that are treated.

The yard has a bridge crane in the workshop naval and cranes of various types and flow for the assembly of the hull and of equipment components; a large yard and warehouses for the storage of artifacts and goods; of airports or docks where the ships are assembled, and construction of piers where the ships are completed after the launch .

The shipyards are building plants that extend over large areas, and must obviously be located on the shore of the sea or other bodies of water, to allow the release of the boats built. A dry dock or repair or refit is a structure found in many harbors or arsenals to allow for repairs or maintenance of ships in dry, particularly the hulls and other parts of the hull that are under the level of buoyancy.

The crisis at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) prolongs

Posted By: adminPosted date: October 16, 2012

Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT), an APG-LDA’s cargo handler has decided to move Calcutta High Court for a solution to the problem. It finds that the situation at HDC is least conducive to work with the law and order situation not being satisfactory. Meanwhile, it can be recalled here that Kolkata Port Trust has asked HBT to resume its operations at its berths 2 and 8 by October 19. The Chief Executive Officer of HBT, Mr. Gurpreet Malhi said: “As law and order situation remains grim at Haldia port, we have decided to move the high court. We have already requested KoPT and the East Midnapore district administration to restore the law and order situation at the port, but it did not improve”. Mr. Malhi also said that he had had several meetings with the port officials to impress upon them the need to improve the situation at the port but he had not got adequate response from them. He added: “The port officials have asked us to start operations before October 19, but it is not feasible for us to start operations in such a short span of time looking at the current law and order situation prevailing at the port”.

The Port of Kolkata (Bengali: কলকাতা বন্দর) is a riverine port in the city of Kolkata, India, located around 126 miles (203 km) from the sea.[4] It is the oldest operating port in India, and was constructed by the British East India Company.

The Port has two distinct dock systems - Kolkata Docks at Kolkata and a deep water dock at Haldia Dock Complex, Haldia.

In the 19th century Kolkata Port was the premier port in British India. After independence its importance decreased because of factors including the Partition of Bengal (1905), reduction in size of the port hinterland and economic stagnation in eastern India.
