1) INTRODUCTION

Kwangyang port, an adjacent port just Yosu and Samil port outside, is an industrial port, which have grown since 1977 as a gaterway to the Yochon industrial complex housing a large oil refinery, a fertilizer plant and petrochemical factories.

A container terminal complex as large as that of Pusan port of envisaged at Kwangyang Bay near Yosu port as the area along the bay hold a gigantic steel mill of POSCO and was disignated by the government as a site for location of large industrial complex.

Yeosu Port and Gwangyang Port are huge ports for a various cargo service that handle 206 million tons of cargo and 57 thousand ships call ports every year. Gwangyang port acompanies global companies such as POSCO Gwangyang Works, GS-Caltex and LG Chemical and is located on the basis of geopolitical condition located at main routes connecting Europe, Asia and North America.

Especially, Gwangyang Container Terminals are planned for 8th generation type container vessel and operate for more than 360 days in a year. Now operates 12 berths of 5 thousand DWT capacity and 4 berths of 2 thousand DWT capacity and can

handle 5.48 million TEU of containers. (4 additional piers are planned to operate at 2011). And we will expand facilities until 2020 with an annual handling capacity of 12.45 million TEU, so the port will become the international logistics hub in Northeast Asia.

Moreover, it is scheduled to complete distripark of 1.9 million ㎡ for container terminal by 2008 and add it up to 3.9 million m2 by 2011

Also, multi-national companies would be attracted by the merit of special economic zone such as free economic zone and free trade zone that reach to approximately 90.48㎢ surrounding the port. Yeosu port was designated as Marine National Park and selected to host the " Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea " and has been developing with the theme of "The Living Ocean and Coast". Yeosu Expo will make Gwangyang Bay as a logistics and touristic hub in North East Asia

A natural base of the crystal clear sea and deep channel, more than 20 meters in depth, The port of Yeosu & Gwangyang is situated in an ideal location, and further, the island of the Myo-Do serves as a natural breakwater blockng high waves.

The route for ships leading to Gwangyang Bay is easy without any navigational hazards and well marked by buoys and lights. The proficient pilots and the guidance of VTS staffs will make all vessels comfortable.

Vessels bound for the port of Yeosu & Gwangyang should inform their local agents of their ETA 72hrs, 48hrs, 24hrs and 12 hrs in advance, so that the port authority be notified arrangements made for pilot, tugs or berth etc. by the agents.
