Descripción:Quanzhou

Esta ciudad es una de las pocas que se ha preocupado por conservar las tradiciones chinas que Mao y su govierno se empeñaron en destruir. Los turistas chinos deciden visitar Quanzhou para poder ver la cultura tradicional que solo conocen a través de los libros de texto. Muchos incluso deciden quedarse y trabajar en pequeñas asociaciones locales que trabajan para impulsar esa cultura tradicional, como los dueños del hostal en west street en el que me alojé.

Las razones por las que vale la pena visitar Quanzhou son los siguientes:

Kaiyuan. Este es uno de los templos budistas más grandes de China. En él trabajan un centenar de monjes y es visitado diariamente por decenas de devotos. Para entrar es necesario pagar 5 yuanes. Vale la pena perderse por el parque y observar los rituales.

Qingjing. Si has visitado países musulmanes como Marruecos o Iran, este templo te parecerá una estructura muy sobria y sin ningún interés arquitectónico, pero está considerado uno de los templos más importantes de China. Fue construida en la época de la dinastía Song para que los mercaderes árabes tuvieran un lugar de culto durante su estancia en la ciudad, pero unos siglos más tarde fue destruida por un terremoto. Ahora se pueden visitar los restos que han sido en parte restaurados para el turismo y el culto.

West Street. Esta calle cercana al templo Kaiyuan es un caos de peatones y motociclistas, pero está impregnada de un ambiente pueblerino que engancha. Es un buen lugar para probar la comida callejera y ver algunas de las representaciones gratuitas de ópera local (no la de Pequín) que incluyen numerosos vasitos de té y escenas locales de señores jugando a las cartas o dados.

El museo de Taiwán. Fujian considera a Taiwán su hijo legítimo y en este museo te explican porque. Es curioso conocer el punto de vista chino sobre las relaciones entre estos dos vecinos, pero también es una buena fuente de información, aunque parcial y subjetiva, sobre la historia y la cultura de Taiwán.

Se puede llegar a Quanzhou desde Fuzhou o Xiamen. De hecho hay un tren que une estas tres ciudades. El trayecto desde Xiamen cuesta entre 30 0 80 yuanes.

Long one of the world’s leading ports, Quanzhou has built upon its strategic location to transform itself into a vital modern city of commerce and culture

Quanzhou is a prefecture-level city situated on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province. As one of the three largest core cities of Fujian, it has been officially designated to grow and to flourish. The city neighbours Fuzhou, the provincial capital, to the north and borders the Xiamen Special Economic Region to the south. To the east, it faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. Historically, Quanzhou was also known as Licheng (literally “city of carp”) and Zaytun (a name given to it by Arab traders who came to the city for trade in the 13th century, with zaytuni meaning “satin” in Arabic, in reference to one of Quanzhou’s finest historical specialities).

Quanzhou occupies a land area of 11,000 square kilometres and had a registered permanent population of 8.51 million residents at the end of 2015. It is also the ancestral hometown for many overseas Chinese, with 7.5 million people living in more than 130 countries and regions all over the world tracing their lineages back to Quanzhou, accounting for 60 per cent of the overseas Chinese population from Fujian Province. In addition, Quanzhou is also the primary ancestral homeland of the Han Chinese population of Taiwan, with 44.8 per cent (about nine million people) of the Han population there having origins in Quanzhou. More than 160,000 Taiwanese also live in the city.

The history of Quanzhou can be traced back to the Song and Yuan dynasties in the 10th to 12th centuries. In those days, the city was recognised as the “greatest port in the East”, while the famous traveler Marco Polo praised it as “the city of lights”. As the only departure port of the ancient maritime Silk Road recognised by UNESCO, Quanzhou has justifiably been listed in the Belt and Road Initiative as a pilot area to set off the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road strategy.

Quanzhou is known internationally as a garden city and has maintained one of the nation’s fastest-growing economies. The city was also chosen as one of the nation’s 18 exemplary areas following the opening up and reforms, as well as being designated as one of the top three consolidated financial reform experimental zones. It also became the first pilot city fostering the “Made in China 2025” strategy.

Under the prefecture-level city’s administration are four zones, three cities and five counties, as well as the Quanzhou Development Zone and Quanzhou Investment Zone for Taiwanese. Thanks to its flourishing private sector, Quanzhou has earned many accolades, including being named the “National Capital of Brands” and the “Special Zone for Private Enterprises”. These titles attest to the fact that the city owns the largest number of nationally famous trademarks —146 in total — of any prefecture-level city. This number also represents one-third of the total owned by the province.

In 2015, Quanzhou’s annual GDP stood at US$89bn, earning the city the highest rank for economic strength in Fujian for a 17th consecutive year. Quanzhou also serves as a major manufacturing base, with garments and textiles, shoes, petrochemicals, machinery, construction materials and food and beverages industries as its leading clusters, each of which has a total production value of over US$15bn. In addition, the added value of high-and-new technology for 2015 was US$9bn, representing 10.1 per cent of the city’s GDP.

In 2015, Quanzhou’s total trade amounted to US$27.1bn, with about half of the city’s exports being sent to countries along the Maritime Silk Road. Through pilot projects along the Maritime Silk Road, trade and co-operation with the Middle East and the ASEAN region are set to greatly expand.

Quanzhou was among the first batch of 24 cities to be announced by the State Council as a “Famous Historical and Cultural City”. As a “Museum of World Religions”, the city has four registered UNESCO “Intangible Cultural Heritage” traditions at the international level and another 31 at the national level. Quanzhou has also been designated as a multicultural demonstration centre by UNESCO. There are 767 major protected historical and cultural sites, among which 20 and 48 are at the national and provincial level respectively. Foremost among these historical sites are the nation’s earliest Muslim temple, the world’s only Manichaean Buddhist cliffside inscriptions, the nation’s largest Taoist Lao Zi stone sculpture, the thousand-year-old Kaiyuan temple and the Dong Xi twin pagodas, as well as the nation’s longest ancient bridge, Anpin Bridge. Traditional operas with southern characteristics have also been well-preserved and continue to be performed in Quanzhou.

With its rich historical legacy, unique multicultural heritage, and well-established overseas links, it is only fitting that Quanzhou should be the only Chinese city to be honoured as the “Cultural Capital of Eastern Asia” in August 2013. The popular CCTV New Year’s Gala also chose it as one of the four sub-venues in 2016.

Looking to the future, Quanzhou vows to upgrade and transform itself within five years’ time and to create a consistently evolving and developing city of premier quality and efficiency. “Innovative, smart, maritime-bound, beautiful and happy” will remain its watchwords for years to come.

Quanzhou (en chino: 泉州, pinyin: Quánzhōu) Es una ciudad-prefectura de la provincia de Fujian en la República Popular China. Está situada en la costa, al norte de Xiamen. Su área es de 11245 km², su población de 8 128 530 de personas (2010).

Historia

La ciudad fue fundada durante la dinastía Tang y se convirtió en el puerto más importante de China durante las dinastías Song y Tang. En el siglo XIII estaba considerado uno de los mejores puertos del mundo. Comunidades procedentes de todo el planeta se establecieron en Quanzhou. Incluso algunos mercaderes persas y árabes tenían sus propias tropas establecidas en la ciudad. Aún hoy, la presencia islámica es muy importante en la ciudad.

La importancia de Quanzhou descendió en el siglo XVI cuando los piratas japoneses llevaron la desolación a estas costas. La ciudad mantiene vínculos muy importantes con Taiwán, ya que se calcula que unos 9 millones de taiwaneses de etnia han descienden de emigrantes procedentes de Quanzhou.
