Historical sites and monuments, Statue, 19th century
Artwork by sculptor BONNASSIEUX. Notre-Dame de France is a monumental statue of the Virgin and Child. Cast in iron using 213 cannons which were used during the Battle of Sebastopol. It was inaugurated on 12th September 1860 before 120,000 pilgrims and is approximately 23 m high. After several months of work on the Notre-Dame de France statue, it was fully restored to its former beauty and splendour. Le Rocher Corneille, its volcanic pedestal, provides amazing views over the town and surrounding region, at a height of 132 metres above the centre of the town of Le Puy-en-Velay.
