On a small mound near Lokhvitsy (Poltava region) in the tract Shumeikovo stands a majestic monument.
An eight-meter bronze figure of a Soviet soldier in a cap and a fluttering raincoat. In his raised hand he holds a rifle with an attached bayonet, in his eyes - courage and determination to win. Behind the soldier's sculpture is the stela of Glory.
At the foot of the stele there is a granite block with the inscription: “In this tract are 800 soldiers of the Southwestern Front, led by the front commander, Colonel General MP P. Kirponos, a member of the Military Council of the front, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (b) U M. A. Burmistenko , a member of the Military Council of the Front, the Divisional Commissioner E. P. Rykov, and the Chief of Staff of the Front, Major General V. I. Tupikov, fought with superior forces of the Nazi invaders on September 20, 1941. Glorious warriors fought an unequal battle for three days, almost all died fulfilling his sacred duty ne units of the homeland. "
On the circumstances and causes of the death of the commander of the troops of the Southwestern Front (SWF) Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel General MP Kirponos and almost the entire Front Directorate in September 1941 did not know much. Rather, the opposite. In the descriptions there are many "white spots", omissions or only general reasoning, including in military memoirs. According to some reports, General Kirponos shot himself in order to avoid responsibility for the death of almost his entire headquarters, according to others - he died the death of the brave in battle. There are not so many witnesses to these tragic events, however, there were those who shed light on the circumstances of the death of Kirponos and his comrades.
