Alcalá de la Selva Castle
The Castle of Alcalá de la Selva, or Castillo de los Heredia, stands in the town of the same name in the region of Gúdar-Javalambre (Teruel, Aragón).
History
Although of Muslim origin, the castle is not mentioned until 1118, when it was donated by Alfonso I of Aragon to Lope Juan de Tarazona. However, after the death of this monarch, it passed again into Muslim hands. Its definitive reconquest took place in 1174 on the part of Alfonso II, being returned to Lope Juan de Tarazona, who in turn would cede it to Raimundo, prior of Ejea, and to the French abbey of the Great Jungle. From this fact derives the current name of the town, Alcalá de la Selva. In 1375 the castle was sold by the monks to the Fernández de Heredia, lords of the barony of Mora de Rubielos, who used it as an occasional residence.
In 1834 it was occupied by the Carlist armies, being later attacked and largely destroyed by General O'Donnell.
