Ayora Castle
Ayora Castle stands at an elevation of 552 m above sea level, in the centre of the Valencian town of Ayora. It was possibly built in the mid-13th century, after the Christian conquest, on the site of an ancient Moorish construction. The complex consisted of a four-storey palace-residence, two fortified squares and a large keep, as well as other outbuildings for soldiers and servants, cisterns and gardens. The complex was surrounded by nearly a thousand metres of defensive walls and towers.
The castle was ruined by the troops of Philip V in the War of the Spanish Succession, but its profile and large dimensions can still be seen. Its remains include the square keep, the false door, built by the Marquesa de Zenete in the 16th century, on which her coat of arms was placed, as well as the walls, ramparts, basins, moats and cisterns.
It is an Asset of Cultural Interest with reference RI-51-0010507, since 2006.
