Beseno Castle
Beseno Castle
Trentino’s largest fortress
Castel Beseno, just 10 minutes from Rovereto, is a castle with strong defensive walls. Its strategic location atop a high hill offers a magnificent view of the Vallagarina.
Castel Beseno stands atop a hill between Rovereto and Trento, in the town of Besenello.
Thanks to its strategic location along the road connecting Italy to Central Europe by crossing the Alps, it was the scene of important battles. Among which, the famous Battle of Calliano of 1487, fought between Tyrolean and Venetian troops who suffered a resounding defeat in their advance toward Trento. In 1973, the Count Trapp family, owners since 1470, donated the castle to the autonomous Province of Trento, which oversaw its restoration.
Today the castle is open to the public. We invite you to visit the permanent exhibition, in the halls of Palazzo di Marcabruno, which illustrates the Battle of Calliano, by means of reconstructions, videos and models.
Observe the copy of the tombstone of the famous warlord Roberto da Sanseverino, who lost his life in this battle. Also notice the painted crests in remembrance of Tyrolean noble who fought in the battle, the first to see the terrible Landsknechts come onto to scene. Then try on and handle the weaponry of the period between the 15th and 17th centuries, and discover all the combat techniques of that time.
Stroll along the broad tournament field, along the silvery ramparts. Enter the patrol walkway through the dark door, and enjoy the marvelous view of the Adige valley to the west, and glimpses of the Cimbri highlands, gateway to the Vicentino. Cross Piazza Grande overlooking Palazzo Comitale, the elegant residence of the Trapp family.
Castel Beseno hosts temporary exhibitions, wine and food events such as the rassegna del Moscato Giallo, and historical shows and re-enactments.
