Betliar Manor House

The Betliar Manor House is the most visited manor house in southeastern Slovakia. It is located in the village of Betliar, 7 km north of the district town of Rožňava.

History

The manor dates back to the early 18th century and was built on the foundations of an older Renaissance castle belonging to the Bebek family. It was commissioned by Štefan Andráši as a two-story, fortified castle with four corner towers. Further renovations in 1792–1795, when the castle was expanded, and between 1880 and 1886, when the building took on its present form, are again linked to the Andráši family, who were already its permanent owners at that time and who owned not only Krásna Hôrka Castle but also estates and mines in the Rožňava area. An earlier Classicist reconstruction and expansion of the southern section and the façade was followed by a more extensive pseudo-style renovation with the addition of a second floor, which gave the manor the character of a French hunting lodge.

The Andráši family filled the manor with a wealth of rare furniture, works of art, and collections. The original library was founded by Leopold Andráši in the second half of the 18th century. Its interior dates from 1792–1795. The collection consists mainly of scientific literature from the 18th and 19th centuries. The majority of the collections consists of paintings, particularly works by 19th-century Realists. The second part of the collections (on the ground floor) comprises imported exotic objects and hunting trophies, which do not hold the same value as the art collections. The park is enlivened not only by small ponds but also by smaller garden structures (pavilions, grottoes, fountains). It features rare exotic trees and remnants of an ancient yew
