Historical
Its origin dates back to the 13th century. Former fortress, the Château de la Bonnetière was part of the Loudunais defense system.
Initially, four towers equipped with loopholes and interconnected by buildings close an inner courtyard. The castle is attacked and partially burned by the English in June 1350 and three of the buildings disappear.
In the 17th century, the family of Vaucelles undertakes a great restoration, then in the 18th century, the Marreau de Boisguérin build the two pavilions next to the towers.
The octagonal dovecote located in the courtyard, dating from the fourteenth century is one of the oldest in Loudun. It was listed as a historic monument on September 29, 1987.
The chapel houses an exhibition on the history of the castle.
