Inner Courtyard. Buchlov Castle 42

There is a legend about the famous 'Buchlov trough'. The lord of the castle would be offended if one left a full table after being fed. The lords therefore tickled each other with a pen in the throat, the contents of the stomach ended up in the trough and the feast continued.

Buchlov Castle 71

The chapel was severely damaged by Matthias I Corvinus in 1468 during the conquest of the castle and was later destroyed. It was discovered and partially restored after 1956. Korvín's powerful artillery completely destroyed two thirds of Buchlov. After this event, the castle was rebuilt and extended with new fortifications in 1495-97. Buchlov Castle 76

Buchlov Castle. One of the oldest Moravian castles, built in first half of 13th Century. It was a important econoic and institutional royal power center, built in Romanesque-Gothic style and later extended and modernized. Extensive reconstructions tried to uplift the comfortability of living, but in 18th Century owners lost interest in more reconstructions, and built a luxurious Italian style baroque chateau in a nearby town. Thankfully the Berchtolds were enlightened researchers and converted the castle into a home for their extensive and very valuable scientific collections from their world travels. A public museum was opened in 19th Century, in 1945 the castle became property of the state, and is cathegorized as a most valuable historical monument. Buchlov Castle 92
