Caracena Castle
The castle of Caracena is a medieval fortress located in the Spanish town of the same name, in the province of Soria.
History
In a sentence of 1136 issued by Cardinal Guido of Bologna, relapsed in the lawsuit filed between the dioceses of Osma and Sigüenza for the ownership of the lands of Caracena (Soria), there is already mention of the existence of a castle in the town . This primitive castle was active in the fifteenth century during the clashes between the Catholic Monarchs and the lord of the town, Juan de Tovar. On behalf of those, his loyal Don Pedro de Acuna, Count of Buendia, surrendered the fortress and confiscated it. Its owner and lord of Caracena, Francisco de Tovar, was forced to demolish it.
In 1491, Alfonso Carrillo de Acuña, nephew of the archbishop of Toledo, obtained the lordship of Caracena and proceeded to rebuild the castle following the constructive guidelines of an era in which the use of artillery had been generalized, for what had been designed both for the best defense against firearms and for their most effective use from the inside. To this the embrasures that dot the castelar walls respond.
