Casa de Piedra Reservoir
The dam is located in the Casa de Piedra area, in the Puelén department, 387 km from the source of the Colorado River, which forms the natural border between the provinces of Río Negro and La Pampa, Argentina; it was built during the administration of Peronist Governor Rubén Marín.
This project is part of the “Colorado River Utilization Program” of the provinces that share ownership of the resource: the provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, and Río Negro. These provinces established the Casa de Piedra Reservoir Executive Agency.
The inauguration of the Casa de Piedra Reservoir Dam in 1996 fulfilled the objective of regulating the flow of the Colorado River, controlling and mitigating floods, and utilizing the water for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation through two 30 MW generator sets, with an average annual generation capacity of 240 GWh
The reservoir has a shoreline perimeter of 55 km and covers (at normal maximum water level) 36,000 ha.
Filling of the reservoir began around 1989, and it is estimated to hold a volume of water of approximately 4,000 hm³, with maximum depths ranging between 35 and 40 m.
