Castle of San Felipe (Ferrol)

San Felipe's Castle and the defense system of Ferrol Firth

The location and natural conditions of the river propitiated, from the sixteenth century onwards, the strengthening of Feroll as a military naval base, and alongside that the development of a complicated defense system, initially centered around the castle, mainly those of San Felipe, on Ferrol, Palma, that of Mugardos and San Martín, that served a double purpose of control of the possible invasions by land and by sea.
And towards the middle of the eighteenth century, accordingly with the advances in terms of artillery, a series of batteries following the shoreline, mainly, but not exclusively, on the Ría de Ferrol.
On the Ferrol side, apart from the batteries of Cabo Prioriño (Cabo Prioriño and Punta de Viñas, relocated there due to the construction of the Puerto Exterior de Ferrol), the remains of the Batería de San Carlos and the Batería de San Cristobal can be visited, though nowadays they have been reformed as parks with impressive views over the river, and the Castillo de San Felipe. On the Mugardos side there are some batteries (Segaño, Sudova) left and the Castillo de La Palma (today a private property).
