Co-Cathedral of Ferrol

The old Church of San Julián de Ferrol, through the bull of John XXIII, reached the category of co-cathedral on March 9, 1959. It did not reach the category of cathedral because in the same diocese there was already another cathedral, that of Mondoñedo (Lugo).

One of its main characteristics is that it does not have a Latin cross plan but a Greek cross plan.

The temple was projected by the engineer and marine architect Julián Sánchez Bort from 1763 and construction began in 1765 on the remains of an old Romanesque church, being completed in 1772. This temple was projected for a new neighborhood that was built in Ferrol city. In 1959, through a bull of John XXIII, it reached the category of co-cathedral on March 9. It was given this title and not that of cathedral because in its same diocese there was already one, the Cathedral of Mondoñedo.
