Cofrentes Castle
Cofrentes Castle
It is located at 394 meters above sea level, the highest part of the town and at 95 meters above the level of the Cabriel riverbed. It is built in basalt rock of volcanic origin, on one of the chimneys of the Cerro de Agras #volcano.
From the remains of Iberian and Bronze ceramics that have been found among the rubble, it seems that the hill was already inhabited since then, the population having moved to low areas in the Roman period.
Thanks to the existing architectural elements and the remains of earthen walls, we can confirm an Islamic beginning of the fortress from the 11th century, from which time, the structures of this castle (rocker) have evolved in step with its history. It has served as a Castle-Fortress, due to the steepness and inaccessibility of the place, and as a Palace-Residence, in a time of economic splendor between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Castle, with a rectangular plan flanked by two cubes and eight masonry towers, had several floors with Gothic plasterwork decorating its halls.
The restoration was possible thanks to research and to the currently visible elements built between the 14th and 19th centuries. Old photographs have been taken into account, except for the finish of the Tower of Homage, since it was made of a wooden spire that reflects a palatial image and a defensive aesthetic was chosen.
Is divided into three parts:
Lower enclosure or Albacar.
Main Enclosure or Parade.
Upper enclosure or Bastion.
The Tower of Homage also stands out, of which four levels survive, the first one only accessible from the upper level, leaving vestiges of its late Gothic and Renaissance decoration. On the top floor of the tower is the recently restored Clock.
From Cofrentes Tourist Info there are daily guided tours of the castle, at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. You can book it by calling 96 189 43 16.
Exceptionally, the visit to the castle will not be available during the All Saints weekend.
