Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (German: Festung Ehrenbreitstein) is a fortress on the mountain of the same name on the east bank of the Rhine opposite the town of Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Occupying the position of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801, it was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1828 and guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been invaded by French troops repeatedly before. The Prussian fortress was never attacked.

Since 2002, Ehrenbreitstein has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Schröter cart with barrel and Schröter winds (Schröterwagen mit Fass und Schröterwinde). The word Schröter means 'grinder' or 'overcoat'. The Schröter was a profession that no longer exists today. Schröter transported wine or beer in barrels from the basement to the car or to the ship. In the basement the up to 1,500 kg drum was rolled onto a greased shot director. With the help of a winch which Schröter that attached to two thick hemp ropes barrel then moved slowly upwards, to load it on the low Schröter cart. Powerful wine pump and the triumph of glass bottles have the Drum transport and thus made the profession of Schröters largely superfluous. At this profession today still remembers the name Schröder. The Schröter Cart with keg in the photo is made of wood, iron and willow branches and dates roughly from the year 1900's.
