Fort Stella
Forte Stella (Fort Star) is a characteristic coastal fortification located in the municipality of Monte Argentario. It is located near Porto Ercole, on a promontory rising to the west of the town, not far from the Spiaggia dello Sbarcatello beach. In the past, it was one of the bulwarks of the defensive system of the Argentario promontory.
History
The fortification was built by the Spanish in the second half of the 16th century, when the entire area became part of the Stato dei Presidii, within which it constituted one of the strategic points of the entire defensive system, being able to communicate visually with the Torre dell'Avvoltore to the west, with the Aldobrandesque fortress of Porto Ercole and even with the Torre di San Pancrazio on the Ansedonia promontory to the east.
The place chosen for the construction of the defensive structure was the site of Fort Sant'Ippolito, of Renaissance origins, which represented one of the cornerstones of the pre-existing defensive system of the south-eastern part of the Argentario promontory: part of it was incorporated into the central part of the new fortification, readapting it to it.
