The bridge, which replaces the first Polcevera viaduct, also called the Morandi bridge (inaugurated in 1967, partially collapsed on 14 August 2018 and completely demolished in 2019), was built on a design donated to the city of Genoa by the architect Renzo Piano, designed by Italferr and built by the PerGenova consortium, made up of the companies Webuild and Fincantieri Infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony, in the presence of the highest offices of the state, was held on 3 August 2020.
