Granadilla Castle
Granadilla Castle
Probably built by order of the Great Duke of Alba, Granadilla Castle is, without a doubt, a singular piece of architecture.
Fortress from the end of the 15th century
Next to the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, within the abandoned town of Granadilla, we find this castle. It is believed to have been built during the last quarter of the 15th century by order of the Great Duke of Alba, Don Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, although the builder has not yet been determined.
The tower is located next to the walls of Almohad origins and, almost certainly, over the ruins of a previous Islamic fortress. It is a sleek building with symmetrical shapes and it is built from stone masonry.
Over a poly-lobed layout, formed by a rectangular layout with semi-circular towers attached, stands the tower which has four floors in total, amongst which we find the basement with well and dungeons, two floors for living in and an upper one used as an arms room.
A fortress in good condition, declared a site of historical and artistic interest.
