Helfenburk Castle (Úštěk)

Helfenburk near Úštěk (also Hrádek) is a castle ruin from the 14th century, about 3 km from the town of Úštěk in the Litoměřice district. Since 1964 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was built on the top of a sandstone promontory that runs into the wooded valley of Hrádecký důl at an altitude of 310 metres with an elevation of 70 metres above the valley floor.

Helfenburk Castle. Helfenburk was literally carved into stone around 1375. First only a small one, soon purchased by the archbishop of Prague and extensively rebuilt into a powerful fortress. Many buildings were carved into sandstone, others built from bricks and stone, the core of the castle was very durable. The main tower was finished in 1395. Priceless religious treasures were hidden at Helfenburk in times of the Hussite wars, some until 1480. The last archbishop owning the castle was weak, and when he changed sides in the war, the warden of Helfenburk listened to the enemies of the Hussites and seized it. In 1456 the castle was sold to the Sternbergs, who at that time were main adversaries of king Jiří of Poděbrady, because of this Helfenburk was one of six Sterberg castles besieged by the royal army, and surrendered in 1467. It was given to one of king´s helpers, who sold it to the Ilburgs from nearby Ronov Castle in 1475. The castle was abandoned at the beginning of the Thirty year war, in 1620 looted and torched by imperial soldiers, and further damaged later in the war. After the war it slowly deteriorated, but became a popular tourist target in the early 19th Century, repairs began, and the ruin was later stabilized, the tower got a new entrace and was opened for tourists. After WW2 the castle got completely covered with trees and was forgotten, until local tramps began with rescue efforts in 1966. Today a volunteer group cares for the castle and freely open to the public.
