In 1556 it was completely destroyed by Bernhard VIII Count of Lippe the Count Johann III and Countess Sabina Katharina von Rietberg and Ostfriesland built the Wasserschloss as a hunting castle on these foundations in the years 1608-1616. The final completion, however, took place only in 1664. In the 19th century, some modifications were added.
In the hunting lock, especially in the years 1845 to 1847, there is a repeated meeting of an influential political circle of friends, the so-called Holterkreis. This circle included, among others, Julius Meyer, Hoffmann of Fallersleben, Otto Lüning, Rudolf Rempel and Hermann Kriege.
