Martín Gil Viaduct
Record: 408 m
Main Span Record: 210 m
The Martín Gil viaduct is a Spanish railway viaduct, one of the viaducts located over the Ricobayo reservoir (Esla river), at the height of the municipalities of Manzanal del Barco and Palacios del Pan, both in the province of Zamora.
This viaduct, made in the 30s and 40s of the last 20th century, is one of the most spectacular in Spain and was the largest concrete arch viaduct in the world at the time of its construction. It has a clear span of 192.4 m, 209.8 m of theoretical span and an arrow of 63 m. The Zamora-Orense railway line runs over the viaduct, located at kilometer point 22.7.
The Martín Gil viaduct, in the early stages of its conception, was named "Esla Viaduct" because it was located on the reservoir that the Esla river forms in Ricobayo. Popularly and throughout its history, it has also been called "Los Cabriles Viaduct", due to the stream that existed a few meters from its location and which gives its name to the Manzanal del Barco area. Finally, it has the name "Martín Gil", in memory of the engineer who devised the project and who died before its execution.
Currently it can be visited from both banks of the Esla river, both by car, on foot or by bicycle, thus enjoying the extraordinary landscape that surrounds it, the views of its banks and the Esla river itself converted into a reservoir.
