Montemayor del Río Castle
Montemayor del Rio Castle lies, in the village by the same name, in the province of Salamanca in Spain.
In the south of the province, and in the valley formed by the river Cuerpo de Hombre, this castle is built on the highest point of the platform on which the village is based.
Montemayor del Rio Castle is a castle-palace existing of 2 enclosures. From the outer one only the entrance, flanked by two turrets, remains. The inner has an irregular groundplan, adapted to the outline of the land it was build on.
In the interior two floor levels can still be traced which were arranged around a central patio. In the left wall a large chimney is conserved, evidence of habitation.
The castle probably doesn't date back to before the 15th century, and has more the character of a palace than of a strength.
Well, this castle was on my route but it isn't worth a detour. It was not accessible and seemed to undergo some kind of restoration. There is a little village graveyard at its feet.
