Monument to Alexander Matrosov in Velikiye Luki
In Velikiye Luki, on the left bank of the Lovati River, not far from the fortress, there is a sculptural monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union, Private Alexander Matrosov. The monument was unveiled on July 25, 1954. Its authors are the famous Soviet sculptor V.E. Vuchetich and architect V.A. Artomonov. The monument was erected on the grave of Alexander Matrosov. The hero's remains were transported to Velikiye Luki from the village of Chernushki, where he performed his immortal feat. The bronze statue stands on a granite pedestal. The height of the statue is 4.2 meters, the pedestal is 4.32 meters. There is a memorial inscription on the monument: “Alexander Matrosov. 1924 - 1943 On February 23, 1943, Guard Private A.M. Sailors at the decisive moment of the battle with the Nazi invaders for the village of Chernushki sacrificed himself and thus ensured the success of the advancing unit. " The monument stands on the square named after the Hero.
