Nalón cable-stayed bridge
The Nalón cable-stayed bridge is the bridge of the Nalón Corridor Highway (AS-117) as it passes between the town of La Felguera and Sama, in the Asturian municipality of Langreo.
History
This cable-stayed bridge, the fourth of its kind in Spain, was inaugurated over the Nalón in 1991. It spans the riverbed as well as the pedestrian and vehicle bridges that connect La Felguera and Sama. The Renfe and Renfe Feve railroad tracks also run under the footbridge.
The bridge was built in reinforced concrete with an inverted V-shaped pier 57 meters high. The cable-stayed section with black cables is 220 meters long and the total length of the viaduct is 630 meters, the rest being supported by piers. The stay cables were manufactured in Spain with 0.6" strands inserted in PVC sheaths. The bridge supports an important daily traffic of cars and trucks, and has become one of the most recognizable architectural elements of the council.
