Niehl II Port is a port on the left bank of the Rhine in Cologne with goods handling facilities in Cologne-Merkenich. The port is located at Rhine river kilometre 699.1.
History
The Niehl II oil port was opened in 1958 as a port for liquid chemicals after Niehl I had already been completed. Its main customers were the Esso refinery and Wacker Chemie. With the closure of the Esso refinery in 1985, Niehl II lost its biggest customer. The port company responded to this in the same year by constructing two roll-on/roll-off facilities (‘RoRo’) capable of loading car transporters with vehicles manufactured at the nearby Ford plants. In 2006 and 2007, the port facilities, which are not open to the public, underwent complete renovation.
