Pillau Citadel (Swedish fortress)

The German name of the city and Pillau fortress is derived from the ancient Prussian root 'pils' - castle, fortress. At the beginning of the 16th century, a strong storm connected the sea and the waters of the Vistula lagoon, making it navigable, which gave a powerful rise to the city development, as it acquired the importance of a fortress covering the sea approaches to Königsberg. Construction of the citadel was started in the early 17th century. It often passed from hand to hand and was finished in stone only 70 years after the construction had been started. The citadel is a pentagon with 80 meters side length. The citadel acquired its final form only at the beginning of the 18th century. Boulders and bricks from the walls of Lochstedt and Balga destroyed fortresses, the oldest fortified constructions of the Teutonic Order, were used for its construction. At a later point in time, additional fortifications, forts and coastal artillery batteries were built around the citadel.
