Porgès Palace of Rochefort-en-Yvelines
The Porgès castle of Rochefort-en-Yvelines or new castle of Rochefort-en-Yvelines is a French castle located in the town of Rochefort-en-Yvelines, in the department of Yvelines and the Île-de-France region. It should not be confused with the Château de Rochefort-en-Yvelines located below and classified as a historical monument.
History
In 1898, Jules Porgès, a renowned Austrian diamond dealer, buys the estate and decides to offer his wife, Rose Anna Wodianer, a sumptuous replica of the Hôtel de Salm Kyrbourg, currently the Palais de la Legion d'Honneur in Paris but by doubling certain proportions.
The first stone was laid on July 5, 1899 at 11:30 and the last 5 years later in 1904. The work was entrusted to men who have marked the history of architecture and decorative art: Charles Mewes, Georges Hoentschel, Paul Cottancin, Émile Devilette ... The best, or in the making, who, after having officiated a year earlier at the orders of César Ritz, Place Vendôme in Paris, have endeavored to meet the demands of their wealthy sponsors, emblematic figures of the Parisian aristocracy. In fact, the building is probably the most daring ever built in Île-de-France between the two wars (1870-1914).
The interiors of the Castle - Great Dining Room, Grand Gallery, Grand Hall (said Louis XV or gilded), the ceremonial staircase - present many elements copied from the remarkable buildings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The models, references for many apprentice decorators, are still visible in Paris or abroad (at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York).
