Port of Gelsenkirchen
The Port of Gelsenkirchen is located on the Rhine-Herne Canal. It is an important transshipment point for mineral oil products and the second most important inland port for grain in North Rhine-Westphalia. Total transshipment in 2022 amounted to 4.9 million tonnes (t). The port is operated by Gelsenkirchener Logistik-, Hafen- und Servicegesellschaft, a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen.
The port was opened on 13 July 1914. Today, the port area covers 1.2 million m²; the total area and two harbour basins of the commercial and industrial port have a water area of 117,800 m². It can accommodate coupled and double push barges or larger motor vessels with a draught of up to 2.8 metres and a loading capacity of up to 4,800 tonnes. The port area is connected to the DB Netz rail network via the Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck railway station. There is also a privately operated port railway line with a length of 18.4 kilometres, which handles an annual throughput of around 1 million tonnes. The Gelsenkirchen tram line on Werftstraße in the port area was added; it is no longer in operation and was removed in 2012.
