Port of Rouen
The large seaport of Rouen is a public institution whose supervision of the State is exercised by the General Directorate of Infrastructure, Transport and Sea1 of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy.
He manages the port facilities in his constituency, which extend from Rouen to Honfleur and the Seine estuary and is responsible for regulating navigation in the Lower Seine.
Since antiquity, the port is a major part of the activity of the city of Rouen because of its strategic location between Paris and the sea, whose tides are still noticeable. Although it is 80 km by boat from the estuary (6 hours of navigation), the port is able to receive very large vessels (up to 292 m long and 150 000 tonnes).
All tonnages combined, Rouen is only the 28th European port and the 5th French, but it is the first European port for cereals, the 1st French for flour and fertilizers. Petroleum traffic, much less important than that of Le Havre, was not insignificant because of the establishment in its electoral district of the refinery of Petit-Couronne today closed and that of Port-Jérôme still in activity.
Every 4 to 6 years, is organized a large gathering of the biggest sailing ships of the world. This event is called the Armada of Rouen.
