History
It is in 1222 that was built by a branch of the family of Virieu a first castle which was the center of the seigniory of Châbon. Originally it was a fortified house where Virieu lived until the Revolution. At that time the family's property was confiscated and the Virieu had to move to Geneva, Switzerland, where another branch of their family was established. When she returned in 1805, the Countess de Virieu found only three ruined towers of her former strong house which had been looted and burned during the Revolution. She decided to buy her lands from Grand-Lemps, Montrevel and Pupetières and it was her grandson, Alphonse, who entrusted a few years later, in 1860, the reconstruction of the castle to Eugène Viollet-le-DucNote.
