The highly baroque, symmetrical staircase of Rastatt has Italian roots. As a master builder of the Garden Palace Liechtenstein in Vienna, Rossi was replaced by his countryman Martinelli in 1692. The two lofty piazzas of the Lichtenstein Palace could even be planned by Rossi. They are certainly known to him and are thus one of the idols for Rastatt. The motif of the breakthroughs to the mezzanine floor might be from the stairways of the Palazzo Torfanini in Bologna, which are known to Rossi from his long-standing stay there. Overall the Rastatt peak is one of the greatest and also the earliest solutions north of the Alps. Rastatt Palace 21
