Schloss Allentsteig
Allentsteig Castle
History of ownership
The castle, which borders a former moat to the east on a rock in the north of Allentsteig, was founded by the Kuenringer family around 1000 and was owned by the Lords of Kamegg-Kaya until around 1390. They were succeeded by the Sonnbergs in the 14th century, but in 1332 they gave it to Eberhard V von Walsee (* around 1290; † 1371), Captain ob der Enns. The Kuenringers came into possession of the lordship again in 1367. In 1380 it passed to the lords of Maissau. Otto IV, the last Maissauer, leased Allentsteig to his henchman Hans Hager in 1409. When Otto von Maissau fell out of favour due to accusations of treason, the manor became the property of the sovereign. In 1440 it was granted to the Lords of Puchheim. In 1486, the mercenary leader Spanowsky occupied Allentsteig as well as Zwettl on behalf of King Matthias Corvinus, actually Hunyadi, King of Hungary, from 1458 to 1490.
