Castle ruins
To the east of Stanz bei Landeck and above the Perjen district of the town of Landeck, the castle ruins are built on a rocky outcrop on the mountainside and are difficult to access. The location of the castle made it possible to monitor the transport routes to Vinschgau, over the Arlberg and the Fernpass. Schrofenstein was also temporarily the seat of the court. It was initially the seat of ministerials from Chur and, from the 13th century, the seat of the Tyrolean Schrofenstein dynasty[1] until they died out in 1546, after which the castle belonged to the family of the Counts and Princes of Trautson for a long time. From the second half of the 19th century, the castle began to fall into disrepair. Today, only the twelve metre high keep remains, which has been renovated by a private owner.
About 50 metres below the castle, the remains of a stable belonging to the castle can still be found. The farmyard was located further away in the direction of Stanz.
