Shrine of the Virgin of the Cloud

The Santuario de la Virgen de la Nube, better known as the Franciscan Sanctuary Our Lady of the Cloud, is a church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Azogues, located in the eastern part of the Ecuadorian city of Azogues, capital of the province of Cañar. It was built between 1912 and 1954. It is a church of singular and beautiful construction that dates from the Republican era, its entire structure as well as its stairways were made with carved stone from the Abuga hill. The High Altar of the sanctuary is entirely carved in fine wood, covered with gold leaf. In the central part of it is the image of the Virgin of the Cloud.

Iglesia de singular y hermosa construcción de la época Republicana, toda su estructura al igual que sus escalinatas fueron elaboradas con piedra labrada del cerro Abuga. El Altar Mayor del santuario está totalmente tallado en madera fina, cubierta con pan de oro. En la parte céntrica de éste se encuentra la imagen de la Virgen de la Nube. En el santuario de los padres franciscanos en Azogues, es objeto de veneración, la imagen de la Virgen de la Nube. La historia de esta devoción a la Virgen proviene de la colonia, cuando en Quito enfermó el obispo Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa (1696) y ante las oraciones que realizaban los fieles, por su curación, apareció en el cielo, entre Guápulo y el Quinche, una imagen de la Virgen María apoyada sobre una blanca nube. Desde entonces, el pueblo católico del Ecuador rinde su tributo de amor a María, con la advocación de Virgen de la Nube. Este homenaje se cumple al iniciar el año, cada primero de enero en el que miles de creyentes del país y del exterior llegan a la ciudad de Azogues para venerar y participar de todos los actos preparados por los Franciscanos, entre los que se destaca la procesión que, a más de ser un acto de fe, se ha convertido en un fantástico atractivo turístico.
