Shrine of the Virgin of Guápulo

The Church of Our Lady of Guápulo or Sanctuary of Guápulo was the first Marian shrine in what is now the Republic of Ecuador. It was founded in 1620 in Guápulo, northeast of the city of Quito, located at 2,690 metres above sea level.

The image of the Virgin of Guápulo was the model used for the sculpture of Our Lady of El Cisne and also that of El Quinche.

History

Around 1587, a small chapel was erected in Guashayacu (Guápulo) in the Presidency of Quito, dedicated to the worship of the Mother of God under the invocation of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Guápulo. This invocation has its origin in the Virgin of Guadalupe, Province of Extremadura, Spain, and was brought to Quito by the Spanish conquistadors.

It was the first Marian shrine in Ecuador. The original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was carved by the artist Diego de Robles and polychromed by the painter Luis de Rivera. In 1593, the Most Reverend Solís, Bishop of Quito, decided to build a second chapel. The current sanctuary is the third building on the site, begun in 1490 and completed in 1696. It is shaped like a Latin cross, measuring 60 m by 27 m at the transept. The priest José Herrera was the driving force behind this work: he travelled throughout America with the image of the ‘Peregrina’, a gift from Emperor Charles V, in search of funds to complete the work. Its architect and builder was the Franciscan friar Antonio Rodríguez. Among the main artists who worked on its decoration were Diego de Robles, Miguel de Santiago, Nicolás Gorívar, Juan Bautista Menacho, Gualoto, Caspicara, and Samaniego.
