Sunderland

Sunderland is a city at the centre of the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, in Tyne and Wear, North East England. It is a coastal city at the mouth of the River Wear with adjoining beaches of Roker and Seaburn (also known as Whitburn South and Whitburn North, respectively). The etymology of Sunderland is derived from "sundered land", meaning land "sundered", or set aside for a special purpose, from those belonging to the monastery at Monkwearmouth.

Sunderland and the Wear in 2014. The north bank looks dramatically different to what it looked in the late 1980's when the shipyards still dominated the river. And yet, close to the north bank is St Peter's church, originally built in the year 674. Part of that original structure still remains. Several buildings of Sunderland University are also close by, along with the Glass Centre. Lining the south bank is student accommodation. The Marina and its housing development are on the site of the north dock. Stretching towards the top of the photo is Roker, Fulwell and a tiny bit of Seaburn. Sunderland 141

Currently known as Bede Campus, part of the City of Sunderland College, these two buildings were first occupied in 1929. In 1944 they became separate sex grammar schools and in 1967 became a mixed sex comprehensive school known as Bede School. The school closed in 1991. A past pupil is Dave Stewart who went on to form the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox. Sunderland 145

Looking up-river from Sunderland. Wearmouth bridge is the nearest river Wear crossing, with the railway bridge behind and Queen Alexandra bridge further up river. Plans are for an additional bridge soon. Sunderland's Stadium of Light stands on the site of the former Wearmouth Colliery. The vacant land centre left is mainly the site of the former Vaux brewery and is scheduled for development soon. Copyright: Robert Hunter (2006). Sunderland 146

Sunderland's Stadium of Light. Built in 1997 near the banks of the Wear on the former Wearmouth Colliery site, the successor to Roker Park is a magnificent structure which has already been increased in size. The original capacity of 42,000 was increased in 2000; it currently accommodates 49,000 spectators, and is the fourth largest Premier League ground in England. Sunderland 148

Houghton-le-Spring. Another former mining village/town, although the site of the former pit remains undeveloped (the large grassed area just above the centre). The main shopping area is Newbottle Street which curves from the roundabout right of centre down towards St Michael's Church in the lower right. To the left of centre is the Primary Care Centre, which was supposed to include a Minor Injuries section, but even two years after the building was opened at a cost of £23 million pound, this has failed to materialise. It does however have a very good restaurant, open to the public, and around 270 solar panels on the roof! The quarry which has been used as a dumping ground for hazardous waste is in the top right corner. Sunderland 174
