Baroque castle in the heart of the Münsterland
Westerwinkel Castle is one of the earliest Baroque palaces in Westphalia. The closed four-wing complex was built in the middle of the 17th century. The castle changed hands several times.
The property came into the possession of the present gentlemen on Westerwinkel, the count of Merveldt, in 1555, when Herman von Merveldt married Ursula von Diepenbrock, heiress to Westerwinkel.
The castle was built in the midst of an English garden. It is a complex of moats originating from the early Baroque period, whose principles correspond to the moats of the medieval castle. The moats, however, were not dug out for defense purposes, for this system of defense was already outdated at that time, but with an architectural objective representative of the Baroque style.
The entire complex extends on two rectangular islands, the buildings are located on the eastern island, the garden is located on the western island. Very striking are the different perspectives on the castle with a circumnavigation of the historical plant.
