Description
The first castle was built before the 12th century. The north, south and west faces were protected by the sheer rock face. To the east, a moat separated it from the plateau, crossed by a drawbridge. A crenellated projection of the wall formed a sort of châtelet. In the 16th century, the drawbridge was replaced by a single-arched stone bridge. The châtelet opens onto an inner courtyard enclosed by a wall with a sentry walk. To the south are the outbuildings, between the châtelet and the square corner tower. The castle comprises two main buildings set at right angles to each other. Four round towers with machicolations flank their ends. Each tower has a small staircase turret, either corbelled or rising from the foot. A fifth large square tower extends the outbuildings and closes off the courtyard. In the courtyard is a well with an iron superstructure. On the other side of the lane, a square timber-framed dovecote is built on nine round stone piers.
