Brunico Castle
Brunico Castle MMM
Easily accessible Brunico Castle towers high above Brunico in the Val Pusteria valley
Like a protector, Brunico Castle looks down on the rooftops of the town of Brunico in the Val Pusteria. Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg commissioned the construction of the complex between 1251 and 1288 to protect his estates in the valley, simultaneously laying the foundation for the future town. As early as the 14th century, the castle was expanded with a perimeter wall.
In the following centuries, the complex was repeatedly renovated and extended under various bishops. Brunico Castle (Schloss Bruneck) acquired its present form under Prince-Bishop Christoph von Schroffenstein, who had it converted into a residential castle. The Late Gothic south portal from 1584, once accessible only via a drawbridge, now forms the main entrance.
Immediately behind the gate rises the mighty keep, the oldest part of the castle. Inside, you can see numerous coats of arms of the bishops who resided here. Many frescoes in the castle have unfortunately faded and are difficult to discern. Nevertheless, the special atmosphere and various events attract numerous visitors to the castle hill above the town on the Rienza River every year.
Reinhold Messner opened the MMM Ripa here, dedicated to mountain peoples, showcasing the permanent exhibition "The Heritage of the Mountains". How to get there: You can easily reach Brunico Castle from a public car park on the castle hill. From there, it's only a short walk.
