Getafe Cathedral

The Cathedral of La Magdalena (Spanish: Catedral de La Magdalena) is a cathedral located in Getafe, Spain. For most of its life the building was a church before becoming a cathedral in 1991 with the creation of the Diocese of Getafe.

The church, designed by Alonso de Covarrubias and Juan Gómez de Mora, was begun in the 16th century and finished in 1770. The bell tower, dating to a pre-existing edifice from the mid-14th century, is in Mudéjar style, while the rest of it is predominantly Renaissance or Baroque.

En el retablo mayor de la Catedral de la Magdalena de Getafe aparecen dos de sus cuadros. Uno de ellos es 'Magdalena despojándose de sus joyas', obra de 1639. Tal como señala Odile Delenda del Instituto Wildenstein de París, en su estudio 'La Magdalena en el arte. Un argumento de la Contrarreforma en la pintura española y Mejicana del siglo XVII', el gesto de despojarse de las joyas acompaña convencionalmente al motivo de la conversión de la Magdalena.
