The International Bridge of the Águeda River
If we observe the Arribes del Duero from a bird's eye view we can see how the river and its steep slopes are and have been from time immemorial a very marked boundary. Thanks to constructions such as this bridge or the dams with a passable crest (e.g. Saucelle dam), the border between Spain and Portugal is made permeable.
The international bridge of the Águeda river, located between the municipalities of La Fregeneda (Spain, 445 inhabitants according to INE 2010) and Barca d'Alva (Portugal), was inaugurated at the end of the year 2000, specifically in the month of September. However, its origins date back much earlier.
As can be seen in the following image, it is located 150 metres upstream from the last bridge that forms part of the railway line La Fuente de San Esteban - Barca D'Alva, very close to the mouth of the river Águeda in the river Duero.
