Kochberg Castle
The former manor house with Schloss Kochberg is located in central Thuringia in Großkochberg near Rudolstadt and is mainly known for several visits of Goethe.
History and owner
The complex is grouped around a central square, the "Plattenhof". The oldest part of the building is the "Hohe Haus" in the southeast, a medieval residential tower, which dates back to the 1380 mentioned for the first time Wasserburg. The earliest detailed description of the castle dates back to 1659. It mentions a spring in the castle park and a pipeline that fed the quadrangular moat from the so-called mountain pond. Probably the only access to the castle was at this time a drawbridge in the east. The dominant building today, the "High House" to the west of the complex, dates from the 17th century and is built in the style of the Renaissance. Later, a park was created in the west and north of the castle, which connects a bridge with the central building ensemble. Another bridge leads south to the farmyard.
