Landeck Castle
Landeck Castle stands south of the town of Landeck on a rocky hilltop between the eastern valley slopes and the deeply incised Inn River.
History
Originally built as a Tyrolean court castle in the fourth quarter of the 13th century, the castle was first documented in 1296. The castle was granted as a pawn or pledge, from 1518 to 1549 to Schrofenstein Castle, and from 1549 to 1705 to the Gienger family. For a time, the pledge was in the hands of the Counts of Spaur. From 1706 onward, princely judges were entrusted with its administration. In 1840, the court seat moved to a former residence on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße, and the castle became a military barracks. In 1942, the town of Landeck purchased the castle, which was subsequently restored and redesigned from 1967 to 1973 to become the Landeck District Museum.
