Lünen Port
Lünen City Harbour
Lünen City Harbour is the inland port of the city of Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia) on the Datteln-Hamm Canal (DHK).
History
While the Datteln-Hamm Canal was still under construction, plans began in Lünen in 1912 to build a municipal harbour for the transport of coal mined at the Victoria colliery. The coal harbour went into operation in 1914.
Until 1958, the port was also used for transhipment of goods from the aluminium plant (Lippewerk) of Vereinigte Aluminiumwerke and the Haumann sawmill. With the extension of the industrial main line branching off from the DB railway station Lünen-Süd via Hüttenwerke Kayser AG to the port, the port was further expanded. Between 1961 and 1967, Lüner Hafenumschlag- und Speditions GmbH operated the port as a public transhipment facility. In 1967, Stadtwerke Lünen took over the operation with Stadthafen Lünen GmbH, which was founded for this purpose.
Since it began operations, Stadthafen Lünen's business has developed from a pure coal transhipment point to a storage facility for various steel products and a recycling site with over 214 approved waste types according to the European Waste Catalogue (EAK).
