Then and now: a monument to the Chekists and an arrested NKVD author of the project
An amazing monument is located in Volgograd on the square of the same name - Chekistov Square. Its total height with a pedestal in the form of an obelisk-pylon is 22 meters, and at the top is a bronze figurine of a Chekist soldier of a completely inhuman height - 3.85 meters, with a sword even higher - 5.8 meters. What is known about this memorial?
The monument to the Chekists in Volgograd is dedicated to the heroes of the 10th division of the NKVD troops and the militiamen of Stalingrad in 1942-1943, the warrior at the very top of the obelisk raised a naked sword high above his head.
The author of the project of this monument recalled that he had provided for the stern figure of a soldier, dressed in an overcoat, in the last impulse, when it remains only to put his right foot on and take the position "at attention". This monument was erected in the city on December 28 in 1947.
On the pedestal there is an inscription on a memorial plaque made of red marble: “To the counterintelligence officers of the Stalingrad Front, soldiers and officers of the 10th division of the NKVD troops, police officers who died defending the city from the German fascist invaders. August 1942 - February 1943 ".
There are also special signs - on the edges of the base of the pylon - a medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad", signs of the Ministry of State Security and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Note that for some time this monument was in the world and in Russia the first and only monument to the Chekists. And the idea of its creation belongs to the employees of the Ministry of State Security and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The monument was designed by the Volgograd architect Feofilakt Koimshidi. Out of 43 submitted works, his project won the first prize at the All-Union competition. The bronze casting of the warrior was carried out by the Leningrad plant "Monumentskulptura", this warrior is still a symbol of the call to fight. Sculptural works based on the author's sketches were performed by a group of Leningrad sculptors, too: People's Artist of the USSR Anikushin, sculptors - Kosov and Stamov.
Note one more thing: the memorial is located on the right bank of the Tsaritsa River, near the bridge connecting the Central and Voroshilovsky districts of modern Volgograd. The obelisk can be approached by one of four wide staircases. Around the monument there is a park zone, which is called the Chekistov square.
