El Palace of the Marquis of Santa Cruz, situado en la localidad de Viso del Marqués, Ciudad Real. Es el único palacio de estilo italiano que se conserva en toda España. Edificado en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI bajo los preceptos del Renacimiento por artistas italianos que, además de la fábrica del edificio, decoraron con frescos manieristas todas las paredes del palacio. Zaguán. Situado a continuación de la puerta principal consta de unas escaleras que suben del semisótano y dos porterías laterales para la guardia de palacio, situadas bajo las antiguas torres. Posee un suelo empedrado y un techo decorado con pinturas con la imagen de Neptuno, dios del mar y episodios de la historia de Perseo, tratando de introducir al visitante en la casa de un marino heroico y triunfador. Patio Central o Genovés. Se trata de un espacio rectangular de dos alturas, construido siguiendo los cánones de la arquitectura clásica. Consta de cuatro y tres arcos de medio punto por panda, apoyados en pilastras adosadas. Las cubiertas de las galerías (la superior y la inferior) se cubren con bóvedas individuales cuatripartitas de arista, correspondiendo cada una de ellas con los arcos del patio. Escalera Imperial. Situada en el lado norte del Patio Genovés, constituye el paso obligado, tanto de las personas de la esfera próxima del marqués como de los invitados a ceremonias o fiestas. Ésta está adaptada a la “genovesa”, es decir, con bóvedas individuales para cada uno de los tramos. Tanto la función como la forma de dicha escalera permiten visualizar un camino de ascensión que en el primer rellano da la oportunidad de elegir entre dos tramos alternativos hasta llegar al piso superior. En su techo está representado la guerra marítima de Portugal (la toma de Lisboa). La escuadra española fue organizada y dirigida por D. Álvaro de Bazán en 1581, logrando la Armada uno de sus mayores triunfos. La iconografía de esta sala confirma la función representativa del titular del palacio como dueño de los mares. D. Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán. Preside el Salón de Portugal. Este personaje (1526-1588) fue un almirante español del siglo XVI, célebre por el uso de los galeones de guerra y por utilizar por primera vez la infantería de marina para realizar operaciones anfibias. Ostentó los más altos títulos nobiliarios y ocupó cargos tan relevantes como miembro del Consejo de su Majestad Felipe II o capitán general del Mar Océano, participando con éxito en las batallas navales de Portugal (toma de Lisboa) o Lepanto. Salón de Honor. Preside la parte central del ala sur de la primera planta. Es el salón más importante de la casa con balcón sobre la portada principal. Posee una chimenea de gusto clásico realizada en pizarra y mármol de carrara. Las pinturas del techo se han perdido totalmente, pero las que aparecen en sus paredes nos ofrecen vistas de una columnata fingida abierta a paisajes y arquitecturas ideales y propias del renacimiento italiano. Salón del Linaje. Se sitúa en el ala oriental de la primera planta, una zona que participa del ambiente privado y de espacios de recibimiento y ceremonial. Esta estancia goza de una mayor amplitud y tiene una mayor importancia a efectos de representación. Las pinturas que aparecen en ella nos muestran la historia del linaje de los Bazán. En su techo vemos el origen mítico de la familia y del blasón familiar y alrededor una galería de retratos desde el fundador del linaje hasta los padres del marqués. Su suelo se cubre con baldosas de barro desbastado (pulido) dispuestas en espiga y sus paredes están pintadas con trampantojos, simulando formas arquitectónicas clásicas. Su interior recuerda un templete clásico con una cabecera formada por un arco de medio punto de honda cimbra, decorado con casetones, florones y grutescos, que descansa en una cornisa y pilastras adosadas. Este arco cobija en su interior el cuadro de Santiago Matamoros. Debajo de la mesa del altar aparece un arcón donde están depositados los restos de Álvaro de Bazán y su familia. Su interior recuerda un templete clásico con una cabecera formada por un arco de medio punto de honda cimbra, decorado con casetones, florones y grutescos, que descansa en una cornisa y pilastras adosadas. Están situadas a la entrada del Salón de Portugal al que se accede desde el jardín, en el ala oeste de la planta baja. Las figuras son un ejemplo de la escultura funeraria perteneciente al primer tercio del S. XVII. Su creador fue Antonio de Riera, escultor relacionado con la corte de origen catalán.
