Port of Dresde
The ports in Dresden are inland ports located on the Elbe River within the current territory of the Saxon state capital, Dresden. Only the newest port, the Alberthafen Dresden-Friedrichstadt, remains significant for cargo handling.
The Elbe has always been an important transport route for Dresden, especially since, at the beginning of the city's development as a merchant settlement, the surrounding forests were much more extensive and the land routes were mostly unpaved. While land-based transport gained importance over the centuries, Elbe ferries have remained a part of Dresden's Elbe crossings even eight centuries after the construction of the first stone Elbe bridge, first mentioned around 1230.
While the initially unpaved, and later quay-walled, Elbe riverbank served as landing points for Elbe ferries and smaller transport vessels, the increasingly larger, motorized ships from the 19th century onward necessitated different forms of cargo handling. The Saxon Steamship Company, which operates excursion boats with its White Fleet, still uses fortified landing stages on the banks of the Elbe. Within the city, this is the Terrassenufer on the left bank of the Elbe (orographic left).
