Port of Dunaújváros
The port of Dunaújváros began operations in 1954. The need to build the Dunaújváros ironworks was first articulated by István Széchenyi in 1842, who wrote a letter to the English engineer William Tierney Clark on April 5, 1842. He wanted to increase trade on the Danube. Starting in 1831, navigation conditions toward Vaskapu were improved, and a canal was opened in 1846.
On March 6, 1950, a decision was made among three options: the port at Dunapentele on Szalki Island, the construction of a port on Kisapostagi Island, or the construction of a Danube port in the area below Kisapostag. The northern part of Szalki Island was designated for the work; according to the plans, a cable car was to be built from the southern part to the steelworks. The State Industrial Design Institute was commissioned to design the Dunaújváros port. The design was accepted on March 8, 1950.
